Defence Minister: Hungarian WWI Soldiers Heroes, Not Only Victims

Budapest, March 30 (MTI) – Hungarian soldiers who fell in World War I were not only victims, but heroes as well, the Hungarian defence minister said in western Hungary on Sunday, at a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war.

The example of these of our heroes, their personal sacrifice as well as their loyalty, are also part of a decision taken in a referendum later in 1923 by the locals in Narda expressing their wish to belong to Hungary, said Csaba Hende in the village located on the border with Austria.

The village, populated mostly by Croatian people, was attached to Austria under the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, but returned to Hungary in 1923 as a result of the referendum.

Csaba Hende inaugurated a renovated memorial commemorating WWI and WWII.

Krisztian Glavanics, the local mayor, said that the memorial had been erected in 1927 with donations from descendants or relatives of one-time residents of Narda living in the United States.

A plaque to commemorate the heroes and victims of WWII was placed on the memorial in 1989.
