Defence Minister: We’re ensuring peace for Hungarians with best equipment

Visiting Krauss-Maffei Wegmann’s (KMW) factory in Munich on Thursday, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said: “We’re ensuring peace for Hungarians with the best equipment possible”.

Hungary has ordered 44 “top-notch-technology” Leopard 2A7 tanks manufactured by KMW, the minister said in a video posted on social media. The tanks have been offered to NATO, but will form a part of the Hungarian army’s “heavy brigade” guaranteeing the country’s security, he said.

The Leopard fleet will be completed with Leguan bridge-laying tanks and other types of military vehicle, Szalay-Bobrovniczky said.

Cooperation is ongoing with the KMW factory’s management regarding additional services, including simulation exercises and maintenance for supporting “this ultramodern, high-quality fleet” in the future.

“For peace we need strength; we’re continuing our work,” the minister said.

  1. A tad overdue (remember, our Politicians have been in power since 2010).

However, by 2025, there should be decent interoperability among Hungarian and German / NATO forces (we currently still have a lot of Soviet ///, which just scuppers your supply chain when things heat up…).

Good read if you’re interested in the development of defense spending and how we compare (fact: Hungarian wages are low!).

Great to be part of the NATO family. We would be feeling a lot less safe without it.

  2. An active force of 23,000 (25% female), 56 Modern tanks, 16 modern fixed wing aircraft will not ensure Hungary’s national security.
