Hungarian deputy mayor allegedly assaults woman at festival: she may lose sight in one eye

A young woman has reported a serious assault on social media, claiming that András Bodor, the deputy mayor of Szentmártonkáta in Pest County, attacked her at the town’s sausage-stuffing festival. The victim says the incident may result in permanent vision loss, with doctors unable to guarantee that her left eye can be saved.

Gréta Bordás-Pauza shared a post from an ambulance after undergoing a CT scan. She wrote that she had been waiting for over two hours to be admitted to hospital and undergo surgery. According to her account, she is experiencing “excruciating pain” and faces the risk of losing sight in one eye permanently.

Argument escalates to violence

Bordás-Pauza explained that she had attended the festival with her husband, and after consuming some alcohol, she got into a dispute with the deputy mayor. She alleges that the politician had previously offered her a job at the local council “in exchange for sexual services” at a village event, which she rejected.

At the recent festival, the matter came up again, and according to the woman, the argument escalated into physical violence.

“As soon as I expressed my disapproval, he smashed my head,” she wrote in her post. She added that several witnesses saw the incident, and they are currently being questioned by police.

Loss of consciousness and husband taken into custody

The victim said she lost consciousness after being struck. Her husband attempted to defend her, but according to her account, he was detained at the scene. Meanwhile, she was taken by ambulance and waited for hospital treatment.

On social media, she shared several photographs showing her injuries, emphasising that they are genuine. “This is not artificial intelligence,” she wrote.

Potential political repercussions

The post has sparked widespread outrage among commenters and has been widely shared online. In her post, the woman also raised political questions and directly addressed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, seeking a response to the incident. A police investigation is expected, which could clarify the exact circumstances and assign responsibility. Official statements from the authorities have not yet been released.

UPDATE: Bodor says the accusations are unfounded, but resigns

Bodor responded to the accusations in a Facebook post that has since been made unavailable. According to Magyar Hang, he wrote, “Due to last night’s events, I have become the focus of serious accusations. These accusations are unfounded and untrue. I do not want my case to become a topic of the election campaign, even though I have never been a candidate or member of any party. I will face the investigation, and to ensure that it proceeds smoothly and fairly, without party political accusations, I am resigning from my position as deputy mayor with immediate effect.”

According to the portal’s article, Tibor Pogácsás, the local representative candidate for Fidesz, also spoke out: he said that, contrary to the claims made on social media, the deputy mayor does not hold his office under the banner of Fidesz, has never run as a Fidesz candidate, and has never been a member of Fidesz.

“Violence and irresponsible accusations are not the solution, and judging without knowing the facts is also irresponsible. It is the task of the authorities to investigate the matter. We condemn all forms of violence, whoever commits it. I wish the victim a speedy recovery,” he wrote.
