Will early election be held in April in Hungary? PM Orbán’s main challenger in “campaign mode” – UPDATED: Think-tank, NVI
Tisza Party leader Péter Magyar has declared the second half of April as a “realistic” target period to hold an early election, saying that the opposition party will switch to “campaign mode” from Jan 6. Meanwhile, the Hungarian National Election Committee (NVI) cleared why the 2025 state budget contains a HUF 8.4 billion election spending.
In a statement on Thursday, Magyar said the number of unique views of his New Year’s speech had reached 2 million. “Tisza’s message has reached the vast majority of our compatriots,” he added in the statement. If Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not balk at the initiative, then an early elections “could realistically take place in the second half of April,” the statement said.
He said Tisza was stepping up the process of selecting 106 individual parliamentary candidates and finalising the party’s governing manifesto.
“The stakes are huge for the future of our families and our country,” he said, appealing to supporters to “contribute financially, as volunteers and as experts, according to their capabilities…” Magyar also said his party would “represent every Hungarian as equals, regardless of origin or party affiliation”, adding that: “The homeland comes first.”
‘Brussels impatient, not Magyar about the early elections, says Fidesz
Máté Kocsis, the group leader of ruling Fidesz, rejected Tisza leader Peter Magyar’s call for early elections, adding: “It isn’t Peter Magyar who is impatient to hold early elections but his handlers in Brussels.” Responding to Magyar’s speech on New Year’s Eve, Kocsis said that Tisza “can’t seriously want early elections, seeing as they can’t even run at the by-elections in Dombovar next week”.
“It is Manfred Weber et al who want to put their hands on Hungary; they are very much bothered by the sovereigntist Hungarian government and by its obstruction of their idiotic and dangerous plans. We are in their way… They’re impatient; they are the ones who want to topple the government as soon as possible…”, Kocsis said. Kocsis said Hungarian voters in past elections had decided on Hungary’s direction and would do so again in 2026.
Early election not on the cards, says government-close think-tank
The idea of holding an early election in Hungary has no viable political or social basis, an analyst of the Centre for Fundamental Rights told public radio in an interview on Friday.
Levente Szikra noted that opposition Tisza Party leader Peter Magyar had compared the current state of affairs to the situation after former prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány made his infamous 2006 Őszöd speech, in which he admitted that the government had “lied day and night”. Fidesz, in opposition at the time, demanded an early election, he further noted, adding that Hungary had been mired in a “moral crisis” and the Socialist government had failed to deliver on its promises. But the situation now, he said, bore no comparison to what the country faced under Gyurcsány.
Szikra said the incumbent Fidesz government enjoyed a strong mandate, insisting for example that the Fidesz-Christian-Democrats had won last year’s European Parliament election “by a landslide”. Szikra said early elections were a normal part of European democratic politics when a political crisis emerged and the legitimacy of the government and its social support evaporated. “But this isn’t something that can be said of Hungary,” he said.
National Election Committee (NVI) cleared the situation
National Election Committee (NVI) told 444 that the 2025 budget allocation for the 2026 elections is not strange since they must cover the costs of the IT system, the servers and other devices, and the costs of the by-elections (parliamentary, mayoral, local governmental). For example, there will be two by-elections in 2025 because of the tragic death of Secretary Árpád János Potápi and the court decision concerning László Varju (Gyurcsány’s DK).
The NVI added about the HUF 8.4 billion for the 2026 elections we wrote in THIS article that it covers chiefly the costs of the IT system operation (HUF 6.6 billion). That means the Hungarian government does not prepare for an early election in 2025 in Hungary.
Such a move would be unprecedented in Hungary. After the change of the regime (1990) all governments served their terms. Furthermore, the Orbán cabinet is probably not yet ready for an election since they believe 2025 will be an annus mirabilis with significant economic growth, lots of money transactions to the citizens with which they can hope to win the 2026 elections.
Based on opposition and independent polls, Magyar’s Tisza party is currently leading, while government-close pollsters found a Fidesz majority. However, even they said Orbán’s Fidesz is far from the supermajority they won in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
