Easter in Hungary: shop closures, free parking, transport changes and what stays open

Easter is bringing a four-day long weekend in Hungary, and with it major changes to shop opening hours, public transport, parking, pharmacies and postal services. For tourists, expats and locals alike, planning ahead will be essential, especially if you need groceries, medicine or travel between cities.
Most major supermarkets and retail chains, including Lidl, Aldi, Penny, Tesco, Auchan and Spar, will be closed on Good Friday (3 April), Easter Sunday (5 April) and Easter Monday (6 April). The main exception is Saturday, 4 April, when hypermarkets, shopping centres and most other stores will follow their usual Saturday opening hours. Smaller independent shops may shut earlier, so it is worth shopping early in the day, Telex reports.
Where can you still shop during Easter?
For anyone caught out by the closures, there will still be several alternatives. Petrol station convenience stores remain one of the most reliable options, including Spar units at OMV and Orlen stations, Shell mini shops and Mol forecourts selling snacks, drinks and essentials.
Some family-run small grocery shops, select CBA, Coop and Reál branches, as well as certain Spar franchise stores, may also remain open during the holidays. However, opening times will vary by location, so checking store locators before setting off is strongly recommended:
Food delivery can also fill the gap. In Budapest and major university cities such as Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged and Győr, foodora’s own dark stores are expected to continue operating with extended holiday hours, offering groceries and essentials even on the closed days.

Budapest transport switches to holiday timetables
Public transport in the capital will run on a holiday and school-break timetable throughout the Easter weekend, with further timetable adjustments continuing during the spring school break until 12 April.
On Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, BKK services will run according to public holiday schedules, while Saturday services remain on the usual Saturday timetable. Travellers should also note that Easter processions on Saturday evening and Sunday morning may cause temporary traffic restrictions and short delays on affected bus routes.
There is some good news for late-night travellers: metro lines M2, M3 and M4 will also run with extended night services on Easter Sunday night, in addition to the usual Friday and Saturday overnight extension.
MÁV adds extra trains for the holiday rush
Hungary’s rail operator MÁV is preparing for peak Easter traffic with reinforced InterCity and InterRégió services, reserve vehicles and extra staff, especially on routes towards Debrecen, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Pécs, Eger, Kecskemét and Békéscsaba.
Train timetables will also shift throughout the long weekend:
- Thursday, 2 April: Friday timetable
- Friday, 3 April: Saturday timetable
- Saturday–Sunday, 4–5 April: holiday timetable
- Monday, 6 April: Sunday timetable
- From Tuesday, 7 April: normal weekday services resume
On the HÉV suburban rail lines, holiday schedules will also apply, while the H8 and H9 Gödöllő HÉV lines will have modified departure times due to maintenance works.
In a passenger-friendly move, MÁV is also extending the validity of selected March local bus passes until 8 April in dozens of Hungarian towns and cities, helping travellers who may struggle to buy April passes during the holiday shutdown.
Parking is mostly free, but not everywhere
In Budapest and most Hungarian cities, on-street public parking will be free during the Easter long weekend.
However, there are several notable exceptions where charges still apply:
- Buda Castle District
- Citadella area
- northern part of Margaret Island
- gated P+R car parks
- shopping centre car parks
Drivers heading into tourist-heavy areas should therefore double-check signage before leaving their car.
Pharmacies, post offices and bottle returns
Pharmacies will operate on a duty rota system, meaning only 24-hour, on-call and standby pharmacies will provide medicine on the three public holiday days. On Saturday, many pharmacies will only stay open until around noon, before emergency duty services take over.
Postal services will also be paused. On Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, post offices will be closed, while parcel sorting and delivery services will be suspended until Tuesday.
Meanwhile, MOHU is warning of heavier-than-usual traffic at REpont bottle return machines, as many people tend to redeem bottles and cans before the holidays. Customers are advised to expect longer waiting times and check store opening hours before heading out.

Mild spring weather expected
The weather should cooperate with Easter plans this year. Forecasts point to pleasant spring conditions with little significant rainfall, though brisk north-westerly winds may occasionally strengthen.
Daytime temperatures on Good Friday are expected to range between 13°C and 19°C, making it a comfortable long weekend for city walks, countryside trips and Easter family visits.
