The apartment was considered one of Budapest’s most beautiful houses, and contained invaluable housing items, documents, and photos of historic relevance in the film industry. It belonged to Mark Rimmel, one of the most famous expats in Hungary, an English star set decorator, who decided to move to Budapest from London after making a film in the Hungarian capital. Here is what happened, along with a video and some photos.

Fire near the Buda Castle Garden Bazaar

Mark Rimmel is known for Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Eragon (2006), and In the Name of the Father (1993). He decided to move to Budapest in 2006 after making the second film in the Hungarian capital. He bought an apartment in one of Budapest’s most exclusive areas, close to the Buda Castle Garden Bazaar, with a panoramic view of the River Danube.

According to 444.hu, the third-floor apartment was probably one of Budapest’s most beautiful ones, located on Döbrentei Street. That is from where firefighters and officers of the disaster management authorities received an emergency call before midnight on Thursday. The fire broke out in the kitchen of the 91-year-old English set decorator. Based on RTL Klub’s report, he tried to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful. By the time the firefighters arrived, the apartment had been on fire, so their task was to save lives and prevent the fire from spreading.
