Everything you need to know about living in Hungary as a developer
Hungary may not be the best place for people of every profession. However, for developers and people working in the IT sector, the country is a great place to live and work. This is especially true since there is a shortage of developers in the country.
In the past two years, there have been labour shortages in many areas, prog.hu writes. This has forced employers to hire more staff and implement significant wage increases. These have included the information technology sector, which has seen very significant pay rises.
IT salaries in Hungary
Although you can still earn more as a developer abroad, Hungarian wages have also increased considerably, prog.hu reports. For example, software developers can earn between HUF 600,000 (EUR 1510) and 2,000,000 (EUR 5033) depending on their skills, but database administrators can also earn between HUF 600,000 and 1,600,000 (EUR 4026). Lead developers, on the other hand, can earn up to HUF 1,250,000 (EUR 3146) – 2,000,000 per month. Full stack developers can be paid up to HUF 2,100,000 (EUR 5285) and DevOps engineers can be paid up to HUF 2,300,000 (EUR 5788).
The IT sector in Budapest
The IT sector makes up a large part – 10 percent – of Hungarian GDP, easyreadernews.com writes. The offices of Google, Microsoft, IBM and HP are located in Budapest. This means that you will not have too much of a hard time finding a workplace that suits you.
How much does living cost in Hungary?
As can be read in the article of easyreadernews.com, the estimated cost of living in Hungary now is about EUR 350-400 per month. However, by now, that has gone up by a lot. Including food and accommodation, it is rather EUR 800-1000 to live comfortably, especially in Budapest. Popular grocery supermarkets include Tesco, Aldi, CBA, Lidl. Fast food is available widely, but surely, one should not aim for living off fast food.
Staying in Hungary for a longer time
Every person who is not a Hungarian resident who stays in Hungary for more than 90 days has to obtain a residence permit. Exceptions are EU and EEA nationals. If the stay of EU and EEA nationals surpasses 90 days, then Address Card and Registration Card are needed, crwwgroup.net reports.
Overall, since Hungary has a developed IT sector, especially in Budapest, you are sure to find a place where you can realise yourself as a developer.
