Hungary has become an increasingly popular filming location for Hollywood movies. Our little country is not only a cheap option but also beautiful. Therefore, it has become the favourite location of directors. Check out these famous movies that were shot in Hungary!
The Martian
The Martian is one of the most memorable and successful films shot in Hungary in 2015. According to bphirek.hu, the building of Bálna has been transformed into a NASA headquarters. The film features the famous Hollywood star, Matt Damon, who plays an astronaut. He becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.
Red Sparrow
Red Sparrow, the Hollywood bockbluster was shot in Hungary in 2018. If you are careful enough, you can spot Jennifer Lawrence at Semmelweis University tower or in the New York Café. In addition, there are shots from above Gellért Hill and glimpses of the Parliament and the Hungarian State Opera House, reports havefun.travel. As for the plot, Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to ‘Sparrow School,’ a Russian intelligence service. There, she must use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.
Dune
Filmed in 2021, this brand new Hollywood movie’s location is Hungary, too. Moreover, the second part of Dune will also be shot in Budapest. Now, a whole parade of stars are in Budapest due to the filming. The movie is about a noble family that becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy’s most valuable asset. Meanwhile, its heir becomes troubled by visions of a dark future. Among the starts are Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson. The second movie is scheduled to be released on 17 November 2023.

Blade Runner 2049
In 2016, Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling arrived in Hungary to shoot Blade Runner 2049. However, they did not only film in Budapest, but also in a smaller town, Etyek. It seems like the director, Denis Villeneuve, who also directed Dune, enjoys shooting in Hungary. The story follows Young Blade Runner K. His discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who has been missing for thirty years. In the movie, one can see the former MTV headquarters in Szabadság square. In addition, the Nagyvárad square metro station appears, too.
Inferno
Also filmed in 2016, Inferno stars Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones. In the film, Budapest replaces several large European cities. Andrássy Street, Fővám Square and the Keleti Railway Station all appear in the movie. In the story, Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, writes Imdb. He teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks and they race across Europe together against the clock to foil a deadly global plot.
