Former US Ambassador to Hungary David B. Cornstein dies at 87

Change language:
The United States Embassy in Budapest announced on Saturday the death of David Bernard Cornstein, who served as US Ambassador to Hungary from 2018 to 2020. He was 87 years old.
A life bridging business and diplomacy
Born on 17 August 1938 in New York, Cornstein was a successful businessman before his diplomatic career, with a notable presence in the jewellery industry, Index writes. His maternal grandparents emigrated from Hungary to the United States, a connection he carried throughout his life. Cornstein also twice ran for mayor of New York City, in 1985 and 1991, before turning to diplomacy.
Ambassador during a pivotal time
During his tenure in Budapest, Cornstein was widely recognised for his dedication to strengthening US–Hungary relations. The embassy described him as a “committed advocate for stronger ties between our two nations.” In September 2020, he announced his resignation from the ambassadorial post, and later that year, he received the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Hungarian Order of Merit, one of Hungary’s highest honours.
Legacy and condolences
The U.S. Embassy extended its “sincerest condolences to his dear wife, children, family, and many friends,” honouring a figure who left a lasting mark on transatlantic relations.
