Warning, travellers: Fuel supply issues cause disruptions at Budapest Airport, here’s what to expect

Significant fuel supply issues, particularly with jet fuel, have emerged at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Budapest Airport).

In a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued on 15 July, Budapest Airport informed airlines and operators that from 16 to 31 July, a temporary shortage of kerosene would affect all fuel service providers at the airport due to supply chain disruptions. According to AIRportal, the issue impacts all airlines, with long-haul passenger and cargo flights, especially those departing from the Budapest base, being particularly affected.

Budapest Airport is asking operators to plan their flights in such a way that only minimal refuelling is needed at the airport, and the maximum possible amount of jet fuel is taken on at the departure airports. This strategy aims to allocate current fuel stocks as efficiently and fairly as possible, while avoiding major delays or flight cancellations.

Currently, fuel supply at the airport is handled by two providers: Airport Fuel Services Ltd., a Budapest Airport subsidiary, and AirBP. Most of the fuel arrives via pipeline from the MOL refinery in Százhalombatta, though rail transport is also available as an alternative.

In June, MOL performed pipeline replacements on the section between Gyál and Vecsés. At the time, the company stated that the maintenance could be completed safely without disrupting the fuel supply. It is not yet clear whether the current shortage is directly related to that work or if other logistical problems are to blame.
