Great news: Hungary’s second largest international airport reopening soon
László Papp, the mayor of Debrecen, announced the good news on his social media page that air traffic at Hungary’s second-largest airport will soon resume.
Debrecen International Airport will soon resume
The mayor of Debrecen stated that the second phase of the project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the week, allowing traffic at the airport to resume in the latter half of the week.
He mentioned that the emergency situation had highlighted the crucial role of Debrecen International Airport in the transport, economic, and tourism sectors of the region and the city.
Last week, we reported that a runway inspection at Debrecen Airport, prompted by a heatwave, revealed a defect in the runway surface, leading to the temporary closure of the airport.
In parallel with the repair work, extra expansion joints are being cut at several points on the runway, which consists of 4,000 concrete slabs, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
To minimise inconvenience to passengers, the airport has set up an information centre, available both online and by telephone, at www.debrecenairport.com.
We also reported that, in cooperation with the airlines, 10 departing and 10 arriving flights have so far been diverted to Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Unfortunately, the cancellation of one flight from London was unavoidable.
As reported last week, Wizz Air decided to close its base in Debrecen. Details can be found HERE.
