The Hungarian government believes that the airlines are the number one problem for delayed and cancelled flights in Hungary. Therefore, they would like to increase the airlines’ fines, causing them significant financial damage. “We do not see another option but to make it simply unworthy to risk for the airlines”, Mr Gulyás highlighted in a government press briefing on Monday. PM Orbán said before that he regarded the significant delays and cancellations unacceptable.

Gulyás said the government ordered the customer protection authority to conduct a severe investigation in the case of substantial delays. On Saturday, government spokeswoman Eszter Vitályos said that the Orbán cabinet was expecting immediate, swift and effective measures to tackle the “unacceptable conditions” at  Budapest Airport.

She thanked the airport for designating two zones where stranded travellers can access food and water, as well as mothers’ rooms for mothers with babies, and baby food and healthcare packages for families. We wrote about these new services HERE.

Gulyás said on Monday that the government expects all players in the air traffic sector, including HungaroControl, to pen an action plan and provide necessary information for the passengers. They also want the ground handling service providers to accelerate all processes radically, turizmus.com wrote.

He said there were 12 ongoing investigations concerning delayed or cancelled flights between 21 June and 1 July. He added that the airlines were behind 60% of the delays.

Márton Nagy, Hungary’s national economy minister, summoned László Tóth, the CEO of HungaroControl, to his office on Monday. After their talk, he said HungaroControl must do everything in its power to secure undisturbed traffic. Therefore, he expects an action plan including short- and medium-term recommendations.
