Here are Hungary’s deadliest roads

Here are the TOP 10 deadliest Hungarian roads: avoid them if you can or else fasten your seatbelt and drive with caution.

Compared to the first three months of 2022, the number of casualties was 10% more between this January and March in Budapest. But that spike even exceeded 40 pc in one particular county. Meanwhile, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) claims that the number of accidents has decreased on a national level. However, the number of fatalities rose by 14% compared to 2022 figures. Last year, the most dangerous public road in Hungary, was the main road nr 4, while the highest number of accidents per km occurred on the M1 motorway.

According to Pénzcentrum, in Q1, the number of injured in road accidents was 2.2% less than in the first three months of 2022. Meanwhile, in Budapest, the figure rose by 10.6%: 793 people got injured, while in 2022, that number was “only” 717. Having said that, Budapest’s numbers are not the worst in the country. In Baranya County, the number of injured was 89 in Q1 2022, while this year, that rose to 127, which is a whopping 42.7% increase.

The TOP 10 most dangerous roads in Hungary

The same trend can be observed in Csongrád-Csanád, Zala and Heves Counties. The number of accidents dropped in Veszprém, Tolna and Borsod Counties, so these regions have became somewhat safer since 2022.

Meanwhile, the number of fatal accidents rose significantly by 14% compared to Q1 2022. A hundred people was killed in 2022 and 114 in 2023. In 2022, these were the most perilous roads in Hungary (in parenthesis, you’ll find the number of serious accidents):

4 (89)
M3 (66)
M1 (59)
M5 (58)
3 (49)
5 (47)
1 (43)
6 (42)
51 (42)
7 (40)

However, it needs to be added that road nr 4 is Hungary’s longest road connecting Budapest with the Ukrainian border. If we consider the number of accidents per km, the results are different:

M1 (2.89)
M5 (2.98)
5 (3.93)
4 (3.95)
1 (4.11)

Oddly, there is a dangerous road in close proximity to Budapest, in the Pilis Mountains. Road nr 1116 is only 19.8 km, but the number of accidents is high because roads begin to freeze here earlier than anywhere across the country, and drivers tend to dismiss the potential hazards.
