Hungarian foreign ministry: Luxembourg minister’s statement ‘unacceptable’
Budapest, April 12 (MTI) – Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in a statement on Tuesday that comments to the press made by his Luxembourg counterpart concerning Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Hungary’s migration policy were “unacceptable and unworthy of a European politician”.
Jean Asselborn told German daily Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung that it was strange that a committed European such as Helmut Kohl was planning to meet Orbán. While praising Germany’s open-doors migrant policy, he criticised Hungary’s approach.
Szijjártó said that a large majority of Hungarians had voted for Orbán and his government two times in a row, and his Luxembourg counterpart should respect the decision Hungarians had made.
Referring to efforts to protect the EU’s external border, he added that people who have criticised Hungary’s policies in the past now accept that the “Hungarian solution is working”.
