Hungarian government against international liberal mainstream, says minister
Hungary responds to the challenges to its sovereignty and traditions by strengthening its Christian traditions, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said in Győr, in northwest Hungary, on Friday.
Speaking at the inauguration of a national memorial site comprising the Káptalandomb and the remains of the castle in the city centre, Szijjártó said the world had recently faced extreme challenges connected to financial and healthcare crises, migration and the war in Ukraine.
In addition, Hungary has seen “attacks against our sovereignty, traditions and Christian culture,”
Szijjártó said.
“The decade-long barrage of our self-definition and plans for our future” came because the country’s “civic, patriotic, Christian government consistently went against the international liberal mainstream”, he said.
“Hungary’s Christian Democratic system guarantees its citizens’ dignity, freedom and security, protects equality between men and women, the traditional family model, has declared
zero tolerance against anti-Semitism, protects and cherishes Christian culture and so ensures the survival and prosperity of the nation,”
he added.
The government has responded to the attacks by repeatedly bolstering Christian traditions, he said. The inauguration of the site is a step in that process, as the Győr castle is “an iconic site of Hungarian history, a thousand-year-old memorial of what we Hungarians think of the world and how we define ourselves”, he added.
