Hungarian government open to talks about foreign universities
Budapest, April 18 (MTI) – The Hungarian government is open as ever to negotiations with the United States government and consultations of any kind with the Central European University (CEU), Péter Szijjártó told MTI on Tuesday.
A US deputy state secretary visited Hungary last week, conveying the standpoint that the US does not wish to interfere with talks about the CEU’s future. Up to now, however, this position has not been confirmed from higher levels of the US Administration, Szijjártó said.
The minister said that a deputy state secretary, Kristóf Altusz, had been named to hold talks to ensure that all higher education institutions have the same legal background and competitive position in Hungary. The government hopes that the other parties are willing to accept the talks, he said.
The CEU is not the focus of the issue, Szijjártó said, adding that there were over 20 foreign universities in Hungary.
