Staggering: Hungarian man attacks police with samurai sword near Debrecen
The investigating judge of the Debrecen Regional Court of Appeal concurred with the motion of the investigating prosecutor’s office and detained the Hungarian man for one month.
Hungarian man smashes his home while drunk
According to the Prosecution Service of Hungary, on the morning of 26 July 2024, police officers arrived in a town near Debrecen on reasonable suspicion that a man in his late twenties had been crashing and smashing his home while intoxicated. The police officers took action against the young man and, as he appeared to be cooperative, they aimed to conclude the matter through discussion.
Attacking the police
The Hungarian man went into the house and shortly returned with a sharpened sword with a blade length of 60 cm, which he used to charge at the police. The officers repeatedly asked the offender to put down the weapon, but he did not comply and continued to advance towards them.
As the sword in the Hungarian man’s hand was a deadly weapon, one of the officers retrieved a large gas spray from the service vehicle and warned the man about using it. The man continued his threatening behaviour and approached the officers, only dropping the sword to the ground when the officer used pepper spray on him. The police then handcuffed the man and took him to the station.
He confessed
The Investigative Prosecution Office of Debrecen ordered the perpetrator’s detention, questioned him as a suspect for the crime of armed violence against an official, and successfully sought his arrest. The perpetrator, who has no criminal record and who confessed, appealed against the court’s order together with his defence.
