Hungarian public media launches account on platform X: ‘What you read from us is the truth’

Hungary’s public media MTVA will launch its own account on social media platform X in mid-March, Anita Altorjai, the head of Hungarian public media company Duna Médiaszolgáltató, said on Thursday.

Duna Médiaszolgáltató launched its own account on platform X (formerly Twitter), on Wednesday, she told public broadcaster M1. She noted that social media is the sole source of information for more than half of media users.

“We call them passive news consumers, since they read what pops up on their screen,” she said. Hungary’s public media has been present with almost all of its programmes in the social media since 2020, Altorjai said. She called it an important goal to reach younger generations who practically use solely the social media as a source of information.

“Our job is to be present on this platform so that the conscious news consumer doesn’t have to go any further. What you read from us is truly how it happened,” Altorjai said.

She also called it an important goal “to call attention” to Hungary’s public service media’s activities not only at home but beyond the borders as well which goal would be served by launching an English language account. Speaking to public broadcaster Kossuth radio, she called X a rapidly developing platform which had increased its users by 84 percent in twelve months. It has 600 million users worldwide including 1,420,000 Hungarians.

  1. It looks like the Fidesz government wants to up its’ game of brainwashing the public with disinformation. Control of virtually all of mainstream Hungarian media is not enough. Fidesz wants a social media platform to get into the minds of younger people.

  2. The great thing about X (no need to keep telling people its’ previous identity) is that when a post is seen by everyone, individuals can support or counter what has been posted. And start a dialogue about topics they have in interest in or experience. That broadens everyone’s life. Educates, questions, settles issues or opens wounds…but all imnportant for socialtal growth.
For instance, why were The Red Cross there w. large vehicles to pick up tiny bodies from Hamas terrorists to return long murdered to their loved ones yet had not been there previously to give meds, aide, food, face to face support to those who were imprisoned after that fateful day of attack? The Red Cross from my own experience in Nova Scotia is alway almost the first to arrive to take care of people who are vicitims of any kind of disasterous situation. WHERE WERE THEY? This is the kind of thing that X audience will find of interest.
