Hungarian restaurants among the world’s best of the best
Tripadvisor announced the winners of Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Restaurant Awards 2023. Three Hungarian restaurants emerged as the world’s top in different categories.
Tripadvisor chose the world’s best restaurants after analysing 8 million guest ratings. Places that received outstandingly high ratings for 12 months could get the Best of the Best recognition. Europe’s best fine dining restaurant is Restaurant Bougainville in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Budapest’s Stand Restaurant, led by Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll, acquired the 24th place on the list. The restaurant received its second Michelin star in 2022, just nine months after opening and retained it this year, turizmus.com, a Hungarian tourism news outlet, wrote.

The best Hungarian restaurants
“Our menu attempts to primarily reflect the possibilities afforded by Hungarian ingredients, showcasing our notion of Hungarian cuisine, while ensuring that it meets all the expectations of modern times and contemporary gastronomy”, Tripadvisor wrote about Stand.
Two other Hungarian restaurants performed well in the “hidden gems” category. Budapest’s MadHouse Bistro & Craft Beer Bar emerged in 16th position, while the Csokonai Restaurant in Debrecen finished in 18th place.
“The downtown craft beer bar of Budapest-based independent brewery Mad Scientist. Laid-back atmosphere, family-friendly environment, high-quality fine dining meals, natural wines, and 25 different beers on tap”, they wrote about Budapest’s Madhouse.
The only countryside restaurant awarded is Csokonai in Debrecen. It is also in the hidden gem category, and Tripadvisors wrote about them that guests might choose from international, European and Eastern European cuisines.
