A Hungarian’s average day on a spectacular diagram

population statistics survey

According to origo.hu, the Central Statistical Office’s time scale presents an average day in the lives of Hungarians by activities on a single diagram, which contains more than 166 thousand elements. The data for the spectacular diagram was submitted in 2009/2010.

The Central Statistical Office carried out a time scale recording, from the 1st of October 2009 until the 30th of September 2010, of the 10-84 years old population group living in private households. Similar records only have been made six times since 1963.

The horizontal line shows the average day of an individual chosen from the standard population by activities. The vertical line illustrates the rate of activities carried out in the given minute on an average day of the chosen standard population.

With these diagrams Hungary holds a leading place even on an international level regarding time scale records. The Central Statistical Office made 13 thousand time scale diaries.

An average day

Origo.hu chose a random day and stopped the time scale several times during the day. According to this, it seems like 20% of respondents is doing housework, 18% is doing paid work, 16% is eating breakfast, 7% is on the go and 12% is sleeping at 8 o’clock in the morning.

At 10 am, 22% of the respondents is working, 28% is doing housework, 3% is still sleeping, 5% is watching television and another 5% is doing the groceries. At 2 pm, 20-20% are working or spending their free time, 7% is sleeping, while 9% is on the go.

At 6 o’clock in the evening 5% of respondents is still working, 7% is on the go and 18% is watching television. However at 8 pm 50% is sitting in front of the television, 1% is doing sports, 10% is eating and 5% is doing some type of chores. At 10 pm 54% is sleeping and 23% is still watching TV.

According to Central Statistical Office’s spring survey, every individual – from babies to adults – spends 130 days with unpaid work every year in Hungary. In other words, Hungarians do 11 billion hours of unpaid work every year. If the invisible work counted in the Hungarian gross domestic product, it would increase the Hungarian GDP with 23%.
