Hungary doesn’t back proposal on electricity market design
Hungary couldn’t support a proposal to amend the European Union’s electricity market design at a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday, because it would put the country’s system of regulated utilities prices for households at risk and undermine member states’ scope of power, state secretary for energy policy Attila Steiner told MTI by phone.
Steiner said the text of the proposal contained provisions that would allow application of reduced household utilities prices only if the European Commission declared an “electricity price crisis” that was cleared by the Council.
“That runs counter to Hungary’s reduced household utilities price policy,” he said. “Hungary will fight to preserve those measures,” he added.
