Historic-scale road reconstruction to start on the Hungarian-Romanian border

The upgrade of roads in the Hungary-Romania border area is scheduled to start “within weeks”, involving 20 road sections, a government official said on Friday.

Romania, like Hungary, wants more border links, Levente Magyar, the parliamentary state secretary for foreign affairs and trade, said in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, meeting officials involved in Hungary-Romania ties related to the latter’s accession to the Schengen area.

The M49 will be the third motorway link between the two countries and preparations are underway for the M44 between Békéscsaba and Nagyvárad, he said. Smaller roads between border settlements that had fallen out of use in recent decades “must be renovated now”, he added.
