Hungary and Romania team up to tackle Europe’s energy crisis
Hungary and Romania’s interests in the area of energy are “fully aligned” and the countries will cooperate more closely in future, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a post on Facebook on Saturday.
After talks by phone with Bogdan-Gruia Ivan, Romania’s new energy minister, Szijjártó highlighted the increased importance of cooperation with neighbours amid energy crises faced by Europe in recent years.
“Hungary and Romania have always had a good cooperation in the area of energy,” he said, adding that our neighbouring country was a partner of “key importance” in ensuring Hungary’s secure energy supply.
“We were in full agreement that both countries could offer much assistance to each other in this situation, contributing to ensuring the energy security of the other,” he said.
Szijjártó said both countries backed nuclear energy and had agreed to support efforts to prevent negative discrimination against nuclear energy in future. He added that nuclear energy was a source of “cheap, safe and sustainable” electricity.
He noted that both nations were expanding the interconnector capacity of their gas networks, giving Hungary access to more deliveries from the southeast. He said the interconnector capacity of the two countries’ electricity grids would also grow soon.
