Hungary’s train and bus networks ramp up for festive period from Friday

The MÁV Group (Hungary’s main public transport group) is preparing for the holiday season by deploying more trains and buses than usual starting this Friday, the transport company announced on its website on Thursday.
Encouraging early ticket purchases
The statement highlighted that passengers can help by buying their tickets for the festive period as early as possible in advance. This allows the company to direct extra capacity where it’s most needed.
Extra carriages and buses from Friday
From Friday, trains on numerous lines will depart with additional carriages, and for long-distance bus services, further buses will be added as required to provide extra capacity, the MÁV Group wrote.

Christmas travel timetable details
Regarding the Christmas transport schedule, trains will run to Friday’s timetable on 23 December, Saturday’s on 24 December, holiday timetable from 25 to 27 December, and Sunday’s on 28 December. However, restrictions are expected on most lines in the afternoon and evening of 24 December. Full details are available on the MÁV Group’s holiday transport page.
Some bus services will not operate over Christmas, they added.
Budapest public transport on Christmas Eve
They also noted that on 24 December in Budapest, daytime public transport services will run until around 4 PM, with metros until 6 PM. HÉV suburban trains (except the Csepel H7 line) will continue after 4 PM.
