Hungary’s second-largest international airport reopens after runway damage

According to a statement released by the airport, Hungary’s second-largest international airport will open on 18 July at 0.30 AM local time.

Hungary’s second-largest international airport open again from Thursday

The Debrecen International Airport had to close because of damage discovered during a routine check last week. Some traffic was redirected to Budapest Airport. The planes may return from tomorrow to Debrecen, Hungary’s second-biggest city.

A routine check discovered the anomalies last Thursday, and the airport started the reconstruction of the segments concerned soon after they learned about it. Based on their statement, they cooperated with the Ministry for National Economy and the Local Government of Debrecen.

They substituted the damaged concrete slabs, and experts conducted quality controls and technical supervision to minimise all risks when the runway began operating again. The reason for the damage was the extremely high temperature lasting too long.

More dilatation joints for minimum risk

László Papp, the mayor of Debrecen, wrote before that there are 4,000 concrete slabs on the airport runway. During this reconstruction process, they cut more dilatation joints to reduce the occurrence of such situations. Mr Papp added that they redirected ten departures and ten arrivals to Budapest Airport after agreements with the airlines. They only had to cancel one flight from London to Debrecen.

Here is Papp’s Facebook post:

Debrecen International Airport opened new phone lines due to the increased phone call numbers in the last few days. As a result, their colleagues help inform passengers between 4 AM and 7 PM with increased capacities.

Furthermore, they are in contact with partner airlines and travel agencies to inform them about the changes. They thanked passengers for their patience concerning the situation and highlighted that they continue to welcome travellers.
