IPU regional conference started in Budapest
Budapest, February 23 (MTI) – Parliaments, governments and politicians have a common, however uneven, responsibility towards maintaining order in nature and society, Hungary’s parliamentary speaker said in Parliament on Thursday.
Countries carry a responsibility “towards our world” in proportion to their strength, power and influence, László Kövér said, opening a regional conference co-hosted by Hungary’s parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
National parliaments, as bodies carrying the strongest democratic mandate, have a duty to act against any powers that are destroying the order of society and nature, Kövér said.
He noted that Hungary has a national sustainable development strategy which was adopted several years ago, adding however that the country still had a lot of tasks to perform in this area.
Addressing the conference, IPU President Saber Chowdhury said that regional cooperation is essential in the implementation of national sustainable strategies in which field not only national governments, but national parliaments, too, play an important role.
The event is attended by parliamentary representatives of 28 countries in central and eastern Europe and in Central Asia.
