Hungary’s transport association to complain to EC about Austrian law
Budapest (MTI) – The professional association of Hungarian transporters Volán Egyesülés is filing a complaint to the European Commission over an Austrian law that requires transport companies to tie their drivers’ wages to the Austrian minimum wage.
According to Volán, the Austrian legal regulation seriously violate European laws and result in a disadvantage in competition for foreign drivers, including Hungarians, the association said in a statement on Thursday.
Volán said it is shocking that Austria plans to impose fines of 20,000-30,000 euros on companies that fail to meet the requirements. The association will ask the EC to launch an infringement procedure in order to force Austria to harmonise its law with European Union legal requirements.
According to Volán, Austria is trying to protect its market from competition posed by Hungarian and other central and eastern European transport companies.
