International Friendly Football Match: Hungary Versus Finland
Attila Pintér to make his debut as head coach of Hungary against future group stage opponent Finland, daily Nemzeti Sport reports.
Hungary finished the qualification round for the Brazilian World Cup third placed. They gathered 17 points during ten matches, which is a relatively good result. Yet everyone was incredibly devastated because the success this time was the closest. But the way Romania defeated the national team and then the 8-1 against the Netherlands destroyed every little bit of hope.
The huge failure after the promising start made clear the necessity of change: Egervári Sándor had to go. It was up to the Hungarian Football Association to point out the new coach, thus to decide the national team’s game for the next few years. The first rumours stated that the new head coach will be foreigner but eventually the MLSZ choose Attila Pintér, the manager of the Hungarian title-holder Győr.
According to Nemzeti Sport, Pintér is probably the best choice from the pool of Hungarian managers. His teams usually do not play nicely or have a characteristic style, but are always pragmatic and effective. Given his past as a defender, Pintér can organize his teams defending quite well, which is something Sándor Egervári was not an expert of.
His announcement of the 35 players squad for the friendly match against Finland on Wednesday was not surprising. He called mostly players from Hungarian teams, which he mentioned earlier. He also left out Ádám Szalai, who criticized the Hungarian footballing community after the historical defeat against the Netherlands. However, despite his ability and talent, he is usually benched at his team (Schalke 04) because of his bad form (5 goals in 20 matches), so this decision is logical and reasonable.
Nemzeti Sport said, at the press conference in Telki on Monday Pintér answered to the journalists with Vladimir Koman and Zoltán Stieber and other players. Most players were optimistic about the game, they said they trust their good form and hope they will be named for the starting eleven. Pintér said that he would like to win every match, and he is sure that there will be errors, but he believes that there will be enough time to correct those.
The match itself will be an international friendly, thus with limited stakes. Team usually use these matches to practice new formations or tactics, and do not take them seriously. The pace of the match will be probably slow, with a quite unpredictable score at the end of the 90 minutes. It will start tonight at 6 pm.
