Key factors of Disney Plus’ success! Should Amazon Prime follow in their footsteps?
Disney Plus shocked everyone with its huge success as it managed to get 10 million subscribers on its day of release. Currently, it stands at 100 million subscribers, being the fifth biggest streaming platform in the world.
Disney+ is a geo-restricted platform and is only available in selected regions. If Disney+ is not available in your region, you can easily unblock Disney Plus anywhere with a VPN.
Although Amazon has more than 200 million global subscribers, its growth rate is quite low as compared to Disney Plus. Is Amazon Prime not following the right path, and should it use the same tactics as Disney+? We have shared our opinion quoting the facts and figures in this article.
Price Comparison
Amazon Prime Video Memberships cost $8.99/month, and you can also get it with the Amazon Prime membership package, which costs $12.99 a month or $119 per year (approximately $9.92/month). The Amazon Prime membership is relatively more expensive than the Prime Video membership as it also lets you rent individual content titles, unlike the Prime Video Membership.
On the other hand, Disney Plus offers its services at $7.99/month and $79.99/year. If we compare Prime Video and Disney+ prices, then we will see that Disney Plus is relatively cheaper than Prime Video.
The introduction of a new streaming platform with a subscription price less than its competitors, including Prime Video and Netflix, helped Disney+ in getting a great number of new subscribers.
Subscriber Count
Amazon Prime was launched in 2007 and hit 100 million subscribers globally in 2018. Currently, Amazon Prime stands at 200 million subscribers, behind only Netflix.
Disney Plus got released in November 2019 and has crossed 100 million subscribers till now (the fastest growth rate for any streaming platform).
Disney Plus has outdone its expected number of subscribers multiple times. As it first debuted with 10 million subscribers on its first day, which made headlines everywhere, later the service was expected to hit 90 million+ subscribers by 2024, but it crossed 90 million subscribers in just a year of its release.
According to several predictions, Disney+ will even bypass Netflix subscribers in less than 5 years.
So, clearly, Amazon Prime Video is ahead of Disney+ in terms of total subscribers. However, considering the growth rate of Disney+, it is safe to say that it will beat Amazon Prime Video in the next five years if the trends remain steady.
Content Library
Amazon Prime has more than 17,000 movies which are drastically higher than any of its competitors. Even Netflix doesn’t compete with that number, as Netflix has 5,000+ movies in its content library. Disney Plus has just 500 movies and is adding new movies rapidly, but the Disney+ original movies have their own fan following.
Checking the numbers of TV shows, Disney Plus has more than 7500 TV episodes in its library, and Amazon Prime has over 2000+ shows in its library. The only thing that Amazon Prime needs to do in terms of following Disney Plus is to continue adding new titles to its content library.
Final Words
All in all, Amazon Prime is doing well with over 200 million worldwide subscribers, only behind Netflix (204 million); Disney+ is growing rapidly and has already crossed 100 million subscribers.
Amazon Prime needs to follow some of the tactics that Disney+ used, like introducing new content, focusing on innovations like Premier Access and low prices. However, it does not have to blindly follow Disney Plus in its footsteps as the streaming service is already getting much success on its own plans.
