Spectacular frozen wonderland: Lillafüred’s massive waterfall partly turns to ice

Imagine Hungary’s largest artificial waterfall transformed into a breathtaking icy spectacle, thanks to record-breaking cold snaps. The towering Lillafüred cascade—Hungary’s biggest vertical drop—has partially frozen over, creating a mesmerising winter scene.
Weather forecasts predict even harsher conditions next week, with Arctic winds sweeping into the Carpathian Basin. Temperatures could plummet to -19°C in parts of Hungary, turning the landscape into a true frozen wonderland.

This engineering marvel was crafted between 1925 and 1929 during the construction of Lillafüred’s opulent Palota Hotel, designed by architect Kálmán Lux. Originally, the Szinva stream flowed directly into Lake Hámori, but it was diverted to form this dramatic 20-metre plunge.
