Major overhaul planned for one of Budapest’s most important streets

The comprehensive renovation of the Mester Street section between Ferenc Boulevard and Haller Street is expected to begin in the first half of 2026 and wrap up in the summer of 2027, according to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK). The project aims to create a safer, greener, and more livable urban space that better serves pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users.

Important street in Budapest soon to be refurbished

According to PestBuda, Mester Street is one of the main radial routes in Budapest’s 9th District, stretching south of the city center. The upcoming renovation will shift transportation priorities, putting walking, cycling, and other forms of micromobility—such as scooters—at the forefront, while aiming to reduce car traffic.

BKK emphasised that the development has more than just transportation significance. The area is home to several schools, healthcare facilities, shops, and restaurants, all of which will benefit from improved accessibility and upgraded surroundings. New pedestrian crossings will be installed, including at the temporary stops for tram lines 51 and 51A, as well as at the intersection of Mester Street and Thaly Kálmán Street. These changes are particularly important for safely reaching nearby educational institutions like Szent István Technical School and local kindergartens.

As part of the renovation, protected bike lanes will be introduced. The stretch from Liliom Street toward the Grand Boulevard will feature partially separated lanes, while the section between Márton Street and Liliom Street will have fully segregated bicycle tracks. The plans also include expanded green spaces, new community areas, micromobility hubs, restaurant patios, and designated loading zones for businesses. Thanks to new traffic management solutions, Mester Street is set to become a quieter, cleaner, and less car-dominated public space.

Preparation for the investment began years ago. Back in 2021, BKK launched a public consultation involving local residents and civil organisations. More than 1,000 people participated in the survey, submitting around 5,600 suggestions and opinions, which were then taken into account during the planning phase. The district municipality was also involved from the outset, ensuring that local perspectives were reflected in the design.

The project aligns with the city’s long-term goals of making Budapest greener, more sustainable, and more livable. The transformation of Mester Street illustrates how a busy urban roadway can be reimagined as a valuable and high-quality public space for the local community—not just a transportation corridor.
