The Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest hosted a Hari Raya Aidilfitri “Open House” on 27th April 2024 at the Embassy’s garden compound. Around 200 Malaysians, foreign representations and local invitees attended the event. The event witnessed Malaysians residing in Hungary, Slovenia and North Macedonia from all background and walks of life coming together to celebrate in the spirit of unity, a reflection of Malaysia’s strong multiethnic harmony. Hari Raya is a celebration of unity and harmony for Malaysians and is truly a festival that reflects the beauty and diversity of Malaysia.
While Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a celebration observed with gratitude and joy by Malaysians of Muslim faith, at the same time it is also customary that such joyous celebration is shared with other multi-ethnic and multi-religious people of Malaysia, much like the atmosphere during religious and cultural festivals of Chinese New Year, Christmas, Deepavali and the Harvest Festival of Sabah and Sarawak.
His Excellency the Malaysian Ambassador, Francisco Munis, in his message expressed his delight that the celebration has indeed strengthen the bond not only between Malaysians in Hungary but also between Malaysians and local Hungarians, signifying people to people interaction and cultural understanding. It is a blessing for Malaysia and Malaysians that they can celebrate together in harmony not only in Malaysia but also abroad, added the Ambassador.
Asked about the Malaysians community in Hungary, Ambassador Munis who is also the accredited Ambassador to Slovenia and North Macedonia, informed that there are about over 200 Malaysians, mostly residing in Hungary and some in Slovenia and North Macedonia, half of them are students, while another half are working Malaysians and Malaysians married to locals. Interestingly, the Malaysians also hailed from all parts of Malaysia making the Malaysian community in Hungary even more diverse in background.
The “Open House” guests were treated to popular mouthwatering Malaysians dishes, among others such as Nasi Lemak (coconut rice served with anchovies sauce, peanut and spicy sambal); Rendang (a spicy and aromatic dish made of meat, coconut milk and spices), Ketupat (compressed rice cakes encased in woven coconut leaves), peanut sauce, Lemang (glutinous rice with coconut milk cooked in bamboo sticks) and Teh Tarik (signature “pilled” tea with milk). The delicacies also provided a taste of home for Malaysians who have been away from home for some time.
