Media authority fines daily over Bayer op-ed on migrants
Budapest, May 19 (MTI) – Hungary’s media authority NMHH has fined daily Magyar Hírlap for publishing an opinion piece by journalist Zsolt Bayer which it said incites hatred.
Bayer described the followers of Islam and migrants older than 14 years as “potential murderers” in the article the paper published in print and online last November, the NMHH said in a statement on Thursday. It had launched an investigation into the matter after receiving a private complaint.
The authority fined the paper 250,000 forints (EUR 800) and ordered the article’s removal from Hirlap’s website. It also ordered the paper to post the authority’s verdict on the opening page of its online edition for seven consecutive days.
