Methodology
- Uswitch.com sought to determine the best European cities for food lovers.
- By analysing over 236,834 restaurants with four stars or more from over 1,356 cities across Europe, Uswitch.com were able to scrape 47 million user reviews from a reputable restaurant review site.
- Each restaurant within the sample contains attributes including location, cuisines, meals offered, user ratings and price range. These attributes were used to identify restaurants rated with four or more stars that fall under the following categories: vegetarian, café, pub, fast food, and brunch.
- To accurately map each restaurant to a specific European city, restaurant coordinates were reverse geocoded using the 2021 boundary line dataset, collected from Eurostat.
- The Eurostat shapefile does not have boundary lines for these European countries. This explains the missing data for the capital cities of Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Moldova, Monaco, Russia, San Marino, Slovenia, Ukraine – Liechtenstein was removed from results as its results were based only on 19 restaurants.
- After analysing the restaurants’ price ranges, places with an average price which falls above €130 were omitted from the study. Equally, cities with less than 49 restaurants have been removed from the data set.
- Average user ratings of brunch restaurants were scraped, and final ratings were shown out of 10 to help differentiate similar ratings.
- For the purpose of this press release, only EU countries were considered for the study to be able to accurately compare the prices analysed.
- Data was collected on 20/9/21 and is subject to change.
