The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has revealed the name of the ‘Hungarian spy chief’ who controlled a so-called spy group in Transcarpathia, Ukraine’s westernmost region, where approximately 70,000 indigenous Hungarians still live.
Hungarian ‘spy chief’ name revealed
According to Telex, the SBU shared information about two spies arrested last May. Local papers report that the pair were recruited by Hungarian secret services to carry out various tasks. Both are charged with high treason, having served in the Ukrainian armed forces.
The SBU has now named the ‘spy chief’ as Zoltán A. UNN, citing Ukrainian secret service sources, reports that Zoltán A. worked as an intelligence officer in multiple countries. The SBU stated that it is working to identify more members of the group.

Ukrainian authorities have revealed little about the two alleged spies arrested last year. One is a woman; the other is a 40-year-old man who served as a soldier in the Beregszász district. He was recruited in 2021 and “activated” in autumn 2024.
According to the SBU, their tasks included monitoring military equipment available on Transcarpathia’s markets, the mood of the Hungarian community, the armed forces stationed there, and their alert levels.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó described the issue as part of a propaganda war in Ukraine, calling the ‘espionage case’ baseless anti-Hungarian propaganda by the authorities.

The curious thing about the current developments in Hungary is that the accusations against the Fidesz government are becoming increasingly frequent, and the government always portrays itself as the victim of a smear campaign, even when there is very concrete evidence of wrongdoing. Such blatant lying is actually the hallmark of Russia, but Orban is also demonstrating world-class skills.
