New direct flight from Budapest to one of the world’s largest cities
Guangzhou, one of the three largest cities in China, will be available from Budapest with a new direct flight starting this June. However, there is no news about a possible Transatlantic flight, even though Hungarians would probably choose a Budapest-New York or Budapest-Chicago route instead of a new connection to one of the Far Eastern metropolises.
According to Budflyer, a Hungarian air travel news Facebook page that always has accurate information about new flights, China Southern Airlines will come to Budapest with a direct flight to Guangzhou this June. The first plane will take off on 27 June and carry passengers from Guangzhou to Budapest.
Afterwards, the Chinese airline will provide service with four flights weekly with Boeing 787 Dreamliners on the route. That is probably due to business reasons. As some comment writers framed it, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first option serving intercontinental routes economically. Here is a Dreamliner:
According to the planned timetable, the regular flights will leave Guangzhou at 0.50 AM. The arrival time is 7.20. Meanwhile, the return flight will depart at 1 pm to land in the Chinese port and metropolis at 5.50 AM the next day.
China Southern Airlines has not opened their booking system for the new flights.
Weak chance for a new direct flight to a Transatlantic destination until November
The Chinese airline will be the third Chinese carrier coming to Budapest and entering the Hungarian market. The four new weekly flights will increase the number of direct flights in the summer period between Budapest and China to 18 per week. Thanks to that, we can travel to Beijing, Chongqing (Air China), Shanghai and Ningbo (Shanghai Airlines/China Eastern Airlines) and Guangzhou (China Southern Airlines).
Meanwhile, there is no news about possible flights to the American continent from Budapest. Maybe that is because of the unfavourable relationship between the US (and Canadian) government and the Hungarian Orbán cabinet. US Ambassador David Pressman regularly slams Orbán because of his government’s stance concerning the Ukraine war. In the next round, he received harsh criticism from ministers, secretaries and spokespersons always highlighting that Hungary is a sovereign country.
Thus, chances are dim for a success story like in 2011 when American Airlines began to operate its direct flight between New York and Budapest.
This year’s presidential elections may bring a change in that respect. The vast Hungarian community living in the USA would be grateful for a direct flight to Hungary.
