The European Commission’s legal proceedings against Anglo-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca over vaccine supplies began at the Brussels Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

The Commission, the European Union’s executive, launched the proceedings accusing the company of failing to fulfil its contract for the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, and for not having a “reliable” plan to ensure timely deliveries.

The proceedings are public, will be made up of two hearings, and conducted under an emergency procedure, which means they could be concluded in a matter of weeks, the Commission said.

If only they had been as quick to procure vaccines for the EU as they are in this nonsense. It’s all about Brexit and nothing more.

I sincerely hope that the Commission win this case. As the now public contracts show, the EU purchase contract was signed on 27 August. The UK purchase contract was signed 28 August (the June contract was a supply chain contract, not a purchase contract). So in effect, what AZ did was to sign a contract on the 27th in the full knowledge that the very next day they would be signing another one that pushed the EU order to the back of the queue. Then they did not deliver the quantities promised. That is not just Breach of Contract, that is also Deception and possibly Fraud. AZ are both shameful and shameless.
