Hungarian word of the day!
The Hungarian language is fantastic in many ways. We have strange grammar rules, expressions, sayings and also words. There are certain words that are similar in many languages, but different in Hungarian. Some are logical, while some might seem overcomplicated…What do you think about the following? 😀
As Daily magyar explains:
rendÅ‘rség – police
rend – order
Å‘r
1) guard, watchman, keeper
2) guardian, protector
a rend Å‘re – the guard of the order
rendÅ‘r – policeman
(Literally::: the guard of the order; orderkeeper)
rendÅ‘rség – police
rendfenntartó – someone whose job is to take care of that the people will not make something against the order (he/she is not a police, nor a soldier, but something between)

Köszi! Nagyon érdekés. Még a soc idÅ‘ alatt a rendÅ‘rség ilyennek marad. A lengyeleknél volt a “milicia”. De visszahozták a régi szot.
Thank you! I have often wondered how and why the Hungarian for police is so different from the rest of Europe. Please do more words as this is so fascinating!
