There are still thousands of telephone booths in Hungary
Their number and their use are decreasing fast. The average is only 50 calls per month per booth.
According to origo.hu, based on the latest data of December, there are 4,935 telephone booths in Hungary, all of them operated by the Magyar Telekom Nyrt. 90 pc of them are booths, while the remaining ten pc are in malls, hospitals.
Interestingly, in the early 2000s, there were still 30 thousand booths in the country, but their number decreased to 5,500 by 2018. Even though operating the booths is not profitable, it is a must because the National Media and Infocommunications Authority obliges the company to do so. Based on the relevant rules, they have to place one in every village, where there are less than 3,000 residents and have one per every 3,000 residents in the towns and cities.
