Paedophile Hungarian director to be released from prison: one abuse victim died by suicide

János Vásárhelyi, the former director of Bicske’s Kossuth Zsuzsa Children’s Home, is set to leave prison in April after serving an eight-year sentence for sexually abusing at least ten underage boys between 2004 and 2016. The Budapest Court confirmed that his release is due in the second half of the month. His release marks the end of a high-profile case that shocked Hungary.

A case that shook the nation

Investigations began in 2016 after one of the victims took his own life and another reported years of abuse to authorities, Telex reported. Media reports revealed that Vásárhelyi’s misconduct had persisted for over a decade, and he used threats and intimidation to manipulate victims into recanting statements. His deputy, Endre K., was sentenced to three years and four months for aiding in coercing a victim but was later controversially pardoned by President Katalin Novák, sparking political fallout.

Political and public fallout

The case contributed to resignations and political scandals at the highest levels, including the resignation of Novák herself and the justice minister who endorsed the pardon. Vásárhelyi had also previously been active in local politics and received official honours, despite early investigations into his crimes.

Safety concerns remain

According to 444.hu, the man is currently serving his sentence in a unit for sexual offenders against minors. Vásárhelyi’s impending release has revived public concern over the safety and rehabilitation of convicted abusers and the protection of vulnerable children in institutional care.
