Warning: Part of Budapest closed due to rising Danube level

Due to the incoming tidal surge on the Danube, Budapest Public Road (Budapest Közút) will close the lower quay of Buda between Mozaik Street and Rákóczi Bridge and the lower quay of Pest between Népfürdő Street and Közraktár Street to traffic from 20:00 on Thursday, in view of the continuously rising water level.

According to the latest forecasts, several sections of the lower quay in the capital may be flooded on Friday at noon. However, due to the high water level, the Danube may break its banks even before that. Thus, in order to ensure the safety of life and property, the lower quay must be closed on Thursday evening, Index reports.

From today, Thursday, it is forbidden to stop on the lower quays, so the Budapest police will start removing vehicles left on the closed Buda and Pest quays in order to protect the integrity of vehicles and to protect the environment, Index adds.

If the water level of the Danube makes it necessary, trams 2, 2B and 23 at the Pest quay may run on a shortened route in the coming days.
