Hungary hosts one of Europe and the world’s finest Christmas fairs. As noted in our previous article, Budapest’s Vörösmarty Square market ranks among the world’s top fifty Christmas markets. Meanwhile, Debrecen’s market has been honoured as one of the twenty best small Christmas markets in Europe. We now have the details of this year’s opening.

As we reported earlier HERE , Debrecen’s Christmas market, located in front of the Great Reformed Church in the city’s downtown, earned its place among Europe’s top twenty Christmas markets. This year, the fair is scheduled to open on the 26th of November and will welcome visitors until the 23rd of December. Over these four weeks, you can enjoy the fair, culinary delights, outdoor concerts, family and children’s activities and even an ice rink.

So, what can you purchase in Debrecen? “Carpets, textiles, handcrafted ceramics, wooden toys, gingerbread, medicinal herbs, teas, delicious sweets and stunning Christmas ornaments and decorations,” as mentioned on debreceniadvent.hu. There will be nearly 100 stalls and 30 wooden cabins offering gastronomic delights for all.

Of course, there will be numerous children’s programmes, such as playhouses and craft activities. Furthermore, on weekends, roller pianists, costumed cartoon characters, fairytale creatures, stilt walkers and verklis will amuse the crowds. Santa Claus will greet the children between the 3rd and 5th of December at the ‘Adventi Kuckó’ in the city. On the 5th of December, he will perform alongside the Kiskalász band on the Dósa Nádor Square stage.
