PHOTOS: record-breaking precipitation in East Hungary, cars sunk in water

The Mediterranean cyclone raging over Hungary for days produced 40-50 mm of rain in East Hungary in just 24 hours. As a result, water flooded the streets of several Hungarian municipalities, and cars sank in the sea-like puddles accumulated in parking lots and squares. Below you may check out some photos.

The Mediterranean cyclone, breaking into Hungary weeks before, covered the higher, mountainous regions, West and Northeast Hungary with a beautiful white blanket. However, in the Eastern territories of the Hungarian lowlands, extensive rains took place in the last 24-48 hours, Időkép wrote.

In some places, the amount of precipitation was record-breaking and more water came down in just one day than the December average, which is 40 mm.

According to a statement from the National Directorate for Disaster Management (BM OKF), they had more than 300 emergency calls because of the strong winds and tremendous rain last weekend. Citizens phoned mostly because of fallen trees and damages due to the showers. The number of calls peaked in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, but colleagues in Veszprém and Fejér were on constant high alert too, BM OKF wrote on their official Facebook page.
