PHOTOS: Remains of 27 soldiers who died in WWII found in Hungary

The remains of 27 Hungarian veterans who died in the Second World War were found in Apagy, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. The war grave caretakers are new asking for the public’s help in identifying seven soldiers, Thus, the families of the heroes who never returned home can finally find out what happened to their loved ones.

The Military Administration and Central Records Command of the Hungarian Defense Force wrote in its Facebook post on Thursday that the exhumation of the soldiers was carried out by specialists from the Institute and Museum of Military History of the Ministry of Defence. The three-day fieldwork at the end of August was carried out by the war grave care department of the local recruiting office, the reservists of the territorial defense regiment based in Nyíregyháza and the students completing their mandatory community service.

They reminded that Apagy and its area were a significant scene of the armored battle of the Great Plain in October 1944. Nyíregyháza was recaptured from the Soviets by the German-Hungarian troops in bloody battles, MTI writes.

In 2020, the first survey was carried out in the settlement’s public cemetery, primarily based on a notary’s report made in 1948, in which the soldiers resting in the plots are listed by name. The most important goal of the excavation was to identify them and to place them in a worthy resting place, in plot 52 of the Fiumei Road Graveyard in Budapest.

27 soldiers, hand grenades, machine gun

A total of twenty-six soldiers were found in two rows in the cemetery, and the remains of an additional soldier were found in the Greek Catholic churchyard. So, the record proved to be authentic.

Seven 36M Vécsey hand grenades were recovered from the graves, and infantry ammunition was also found, which was transported for destruction by the specialists of the Land Command. Pencils and combs were typically found with the soldiers, and parts of a 1907/31M Schwarzlose machine gun were also found in one of the graves.
