PHOTOS: Unique Hungarian castle garden opened
There are a lot of unique and astonishing castles and castle parks in Hungary. But the Esterházy Castle of Fertőd offers something special for each visitor. Below, you may find more details and photos.
The Rose Garden of the Esterházy Castle in Fertőd, Western Hungary, close to the Austrian border, opened its gates on 26 May. You can walk along hundreds of meters of arbours and check out various fragrant domestic, English, and German-bred rose varieties. Like in fairy tales, roses bloom in the castle garden, travelo.hu writes. The popular rose types of the garden are already in full bloom by mid-May. There are even the so-called Mami roses with huge blossoms, having a colour gradient from butter to pink. Other roses dazzle visitors with colours from red (Futótűz) and deep burgundy (Crimson Glory) to orange (Rozália).
Prince Miklós Esterházy, 4th of his name, and his wife, Countess Margit Cziráky, established the rose garden. Built between 1902 and 1908, the garden was partly desgined with the help of Anton Umlauf, one of the most famous gardeners of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The rose garden was named after the late countess. However, after WWII, it was almost destroyed. The roses died, the support systems collapsed, everything went wild, only the pavilion remained as a “memento of the good old time”, the castle’s official website cleared.
A beautiful Hungarian castle
Thankfully, in 2015, the garden was restored following scientific documentation of the previous one. Ever since, visitors can enjoy the splendor of nearly 8,000 different roses. The cross-shaped arbour lined with roses has been renewed, with the pagoda-like pavilion in the middle. The garden walkways have also been renewed. As a result, the new road surfaces highlight the beauty of the blooming roses even more.
The garden houses a collection of Hungarian rose varieties. To provide a stronger fragrance, the castle supplemented the domestic types with continuously blooming ones bred by German and English experts. The Cziráky Margit Rose Garden in Fertőd is open every day except Mondays from 10 AM to 6 PM. The full-price entrance fee is HUF 1,000 (EUR 3), and HUF 500 per capita when purchasing a family ticket. Below, you may find the announcement of the opening on the official Facebook page of the castle with all information needed for a visit:
