The renovation of railway line 71 has begun. As part of this, the Rákospalota-Újpest railway station will be renewed in Budapest. We will show the plans for the currently obsolete train station.

A railway station will be renovated

One of the oldest railway stations in Budapest is the Rákospalota-Újpest railway station. There are a number of problems at the train station. Railway platforms are narrow and not accessible. The platform roof is missing in several places, and the state of the building and its surroundings has rather deteriorated. “It’s time to change that,” writes Dávid Vitézy, CEO of the Budapest Development Centre.

“The planning phase of the complete renovation of the Rákospalota-Újpest-Veresegyház-Vác railway line of the 71st railway line has started, including the complete renovation and modernisation of the Rákospalota-Újpest station,”

writes Vitézy in his Facebook post. Based on the Budapest Agglomeration Railway Strategy, the Budapest Development Centre (BFK) finalised the plans in the last few months.

According to the plans, two middle platforms will welcome trains in the future.

BFK asked the teams of three architectural firms, Sporaarchitects, RJZS, and Paragram, to make conceptual proposals for the new Rákospalota-Újpest station.

Large-scale planning in consultation with the capital

During the preparation of the plans, BFK agreed with districts 4 and 15 and their chief architects and the professional staff of the capital. They have worked using these expert opinions and will continue to do so.

The plans of the renovated Rákospalota-Újpest railway station include:

  • spacious, barrier-free, covered, modern middle platforms;
  • the platforms will be completely accessible;
  • the historical station building will be preserved but renovated;
  • public areas along the railways will be renewed;
  • the platforms will be shifted to the south;
  • a pedestrian and bicycle underpass will be constructed.

BFK also plans to build new B+R bicycle storages and P+R car parks.

However, there is no agreement with local governments in this regard, writes hvg.hu. On the new track, trains can reach a speed of 100-120 kilometres per hour. Thanks to the state-of-the-art train station, trains can travel more frequently.
