Russian COVID-19 cases top 100,000, death toll over 1,000

Russia reported a new daily record of 7,099 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, raising its total to 106,498 as of Thursday, official data showed.

The death toll increased by 101 to 1,073, while 11,619 people have recovered, including 1,333 over the last 24 hours, the country’s coronavirus response center said in a statement.

Moscow, the country’s worst-hit region, confirmed 3,093 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing its total to 53,739.

Russia’s consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said in a statement Thursday that 208,236 people were under medical observation as of Wednesday.

Germany registered 1,478 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, raising the total cases to 159,119, said the federal government’s agency for disease control and prevention on Thursday.

The death toll grew to 6,288, up 173 within the same period of time, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

WASHINGTON

The U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday warned that the COVID-19 pandemic poses “considerable risks” to the U.S. economy over the medium term while keeping its benchmark interest rate unchanged at the record-low level of near zero.

“The ongoing public health crisis will weigh heavily on economic activity, employment, and inflation in the near term, and poses considerable risks to the economic outlook over the medium term,” the Fed said in a statement after concluding a two-day policy meeting.

The chief minister of Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) has revealed a plan to gradually lift coronavirus restrictions.

Michael Gunner on Thursday released the NT’s “Roadmap to the New Normal,” becoming the country’s first state or territory leader to announce a plan to roll back coronavirus restrictions.
