Hungary ready to invade Transcarpathia? A Russian expert’s opinion
Vladimir Zharynin, deputy director of the Russia-based Institute for CIS Countries, says it is unlikely that Hungary could use military force to invade Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja). Ukraine would not hand over the territory.
Russian expert on Transcarpathia
Vladimir Zharynin, deputy director of the Russian Institute for CIS countries, does not think that Hungary could use military force to invade Transcarpathia, according to the Russian state news agency TASSZ. At least for the time being.
“I do not yet think that Hungary is ready to take over the Hungarian-inhabited part of the country without Ukraine’s consent, i.e. in direct military operations. I do not see such a prospect,”
says Deputy Director Zharynin. He added that he considers it unlikely that Kyiv and Ukraine would give their voluntary consent to the cession of the territories, 24.hu reports.
He also sees “a decision by Transcarpathia to join Hungary” as unlikely.
“If Kyiv does not agree, it will defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity by force,” concludes Tsarihin.

Transcarpathian Hungarians
The Russian state news agency reports that
more than 150,000 Hungarians live in Ukraine.
Most of the 150,000 Hungarians are from Transcarpathia. In this area, 12 percent of the people are Hungarians, writes alfahír.hu. The Hungarian government has repeatedly expressed concern about the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
In these debates, the language law, which was originally designed to prevent Russian oppression, was given greater prominence.
This Ukrainian language law also prevents members of the Hungarian minority from learning Hungarian in public education in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Parliament adopted the Law on the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language on 25 April 2019. The legislation was already strongly protested by many people. Among them were Hungarian organisations in Transcarpathia. The law makes the use of Ukrainian compulsory in all but private conversations and religious ceremonies.

As a member of the EU and NATO to suggest that Hungary would consider invading Ukraine is one of the most idiotic political suggestions I have seen in a long time. The borders of Europe have not been violated since 1945 except by Russia. Of course this idea is coming from a Russian “expert” to normalize the idea that Ukraine can somehow be cut into pieces like a roast chicken.
@Larry
Obviously Ukraine can and will be cut up like a roast chicken. It’s only idiotic Western leaders that have come up with the idea that in THE CURRENT YEAR countries no longer fight over territory, and nobody should ever invade someone else, unless it’s America of course.
Ukraine has lost Crimea and Kherson.
The Donbas is likely to be under total Russian control in the near future.
Russia is preparing for a move on Mykolaiv.
Odecca is a prize the Russians really want. Imagine the hero status Putin will achieve if he takes Odecca home????
If Odecca is lost along with the other areas mentioned it is virtually impossible for the remaining parts of Ukraine to form a worthwhile country. Poland is already opening discussing a peacekeeping force in Galicia!
Not making any predictions but the future for Ukraine is extremely bleak!
And the sad thing is that thousands of young Ukrainian men have died or been seriously wounded.
Viktor – The last name isn’t Orban is it? Nothing like killing thousands of men women and children in Ukraine and making 12 million homeless. Is that something you delight in? What morality!
I don’t think Viktor delights in the demise of Ukraine. What I think he is getting at is that Ukraine is in danger of becoming a failed state with sizable minority populations in some regions. Even Bruce recognizes this when he says, “Poland is already opening discussing a peacekeeping force in Galicia!” If Ukraine becomes a failed state the nations surrounding it will break up what remains and govern it, possibly. Or, maybe things get a heck of a lot worse for everyone in the region.
Unfortunately, it does look like (to me) that the sovereign state of Ukraine will be carved up. 🙁 I cannot imagine V. P. giving up what his army has already taken.
Any “talks” will still lead to Ukraine’s loss from it’s own sovereign territory, just as the great talks at the château of Grande Trianon did for Hungary. 🙁 Any and all peace talks will be great for V.P. because he holds the upper hand, and would be bound to end up with much more than he had prior to the 24th of February.
I’m neither an expert, nor do I claim to be, but as an ordinary citizen, the only possibility, and even that is ever so slight that’s it’s not even worth thinking about, is that the rest of the world (the balance that remains silent or non-committal) vehemently condemns V.P. – especially China. But there is no way on earth that China will do that, especially in view of the fact that it has it’s eye on getting Taiwan back, and to top that off, it’s already creating stepping stones in at least 10 Pacific Island nations. China (too) wants more (given time), it will take more. 🙁
P.s. I’d love to know how V.P. reacted (welcomed?) to Kim Jong-un’s (“Rocket man”) declaration that he’s backing V.P. all the way (even to hell – nuclear war).
Ukraine will loose a lot more of territory. They will loose to Poland, Hungary and Russia. The country will be punished for the crimes of their nazi leaders. Zelensky will be on trial and most likely he will be sent to siberia and never come back alive. He is a war criminal and will pay with his life.
