Significant change in parking in downtown Budapest
The municipality of District 8 (Józsefváros) is trying to solve the persistent problem of pedestrians being unable to fit on the pavements because of parked cars with a programme called “pavement clearance”. This will significantly change the parking in the area.
According to the rules of the Highway Code (KRESZ in Hungarian), cars can only park on the pavement if they leave at least 2 metres of space free for pedestrians. In several streets in the Palace district of Budapest, in the 8th district, this rule is regularly broken by cars parking on both sides of the pavement, Index reports.
The municipality has therefore decided to open up eight streets to pedestrians in August as part of the “pavement clearance”. This will mean that the signs allowing pavement parking will be removed and new signs will also be put up in the streets concerned, Józsefváros Újság writes.
In most sections, implementation will involve the loss of parking spaces. There will be a total of 101 fewer parking spaces.
The streets concerned are the following:
- Nap Street, section between Kisfaludy Street – Futó Street
- Nap Street, section between József Boulevard – Kisfaludy Street
- Csepreghy Street
- Múzeum Street
- Bródy Sándor Street
- Krúdy Street
- Puskin Street
- sections of Szentkirályi Street
The planned implementation dates are available HERE. Translation of the first row of the table: Number, Public space, Section, Number of parking spaces, Number of parking spaces to disappear, Earliest implementation date.
Yes, let’s make it worse for car owners! It is a habit all over Europe these days.
I don’t know about this one but the sidewalk situation on Dob utca is HORRIBLE. There’s literally no space for pedestrians due to the restaurants on the Astoria side. I don’t know whom they bribed to get a space like that but this isn’t right.
