Socialists call on government to stop blocking popular vote on Sunday shopping
Budapest (MTI) – The opposition Socialist Party has called on the government to stop blocking attempts to hold a referendum on restricted Sunday shopping.
Roland Marton, the party’s deputy leader, told a news conference on Sunday that in December several million citizens had demonstrated their objection to the restrictions by going out to shop on Sunday.
This confirms surveys on the subject showing that 73 percent of the population would like to be able to shop on the last day of the week.
He said the biggest problem in Hungary is “disastrously low pay”. And due to the extra hours the employees put in, they have very little free time, Marton said, adding that this was the reason that Hungarian families find that Sunday shopping is one of the last remaining activities they can do together. “Of course the millionaire politicians [of the ruling party] simply don’t get this,” he said.

On this subject we fully agree!!!!
WE can not work it out why shops on Sundays are closed, what is the reason????
A lot of us tourist can only come over for the weekends and Hungary DO NEED the tourist as we DO HELP the economy with our money spent HERE!!!!!
Has anybody worked it out as how much revenue is lost now??? Especially in the tourist shops???
We admire the Fidesz Party but this move was pretty stupid, sorry to say!!!!
At least ,the Government should give shopkeepers the choice for opening or closing, this would be a better solution!
Fidesz might want to reconsider this as an opportunity. The argument about about low pay and employees working extra hours could be countered by forcing employers to pay their employees time and a half on Sundays. At the same time, not allowing them to work more than 8 hours a day on and a max of 13 days in a 2week period. They would get a day off every two weeks and better pay on sundays. There are opportunities here…
